After approximately 10 months of planning, phone calls, meetings and many emails, BN's 8th year in Blackpool finally arrived. When the clock struck 5pm, everyone stripped off double quick. As I gave the welcome talk, my legs were like jelly and my stomach was doing somersaults. Would everything go to plan? Would everyone have a good time? Would the activities be well attended? These were just a few of the questions racing through my head. I would not, under any circumstances describe myself as an event organiser, so this was a big deal for me.
I needn't have worried. Following our evening meal, Ian and Linda got the ball rolling with one of their ever popular quizzes. This was quickly followed by singer/comedienne Charleigh, who entertained us with her vocal skills and wit. BN's own Brian Matthews kept the momentum going with a disco through to the early hours.
Saturday was just one continuous blur of activities including, group photo, guided tour of Blackpool, (B)aerobics, yoga, Magistrate's Viewpoint, Victorian Photography, Lighting the Model and bingo. It was then time to get dressed and make our way to the Sandcastle for a couple of hours of flumes for the adrenalin junkies, and relaxation for those of us who just wanted to spend our time in the pools, sauna and steam rooms. Our evening meal was followed by entertainment with 'Elvis' until late.
Sunday's programme once again hit the ground running with, Act of Worship, more (B)aerobics and yoga, massage workshop, an intros quiz, Naked Icing Challenge, body painting and karaoke. The evening's theme was Blackpool/Lancashire with flat caps and mop caps in abundance. Another BN favourite, Trident Party Band, making their 5th BN appearance, kept the dance floor filled until late. This was once again followed by Brian with disco music into the wee small hours.
A pool competition ran throughout the weekend with darts, dominoes, chess and drafts all available.
Thanks to all those who came along for the weekend. There wouldn't be much point if no one went. I would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to the following who helped make this weekend possible. Those who provided activities and gave up so much of their time, (and in some cases provided resources at their own expense). Others who worked quietly in the background helping with organisation and planning. The New Hackett's Hotel management and staff, who made every effort to make us all welcome. Sandcastle Waterpark management and staff. And last but not least, my wife Julie, who corrected my spellings. Helped me put the programme together and pointed out the blindingly obvious mistakes and timings. Put up with my stressing out over all the minor details and the late nights. I couldn't have done what I did, without her support.
Here's to Blackpool 2018. ..George Booth
