    Location and the Beach

Probably the most public naturist beach in Devon and certainly one of the easiest to reach. Backed by red sandstone cliffs, it is a beautiful setting. A very popular naturist beach, so if you want to avoid the crowds, walk further down the beach. The beach consists of large pebbles which bank steeply into the sea. These are not easy to walk on and uncomfortable, so good footwear and maybe some form of cushioning/air bed to lay on is a good idea.

Very small pockets of sand can appear at low tide. Due to the redness of the cliffs and sand under the pebbles, the water is usually not as clear as Slapton beach further south in Devon.

    Beach Facilities

There are no facilities on the beach so take refreshments.

    Directions

Budleigh Salterton is reached by the B3178 from Exmouth, or by the A3052 and B3178 from Sidmouth. From the main street (Fore St) turn into Rolle Road, which is signposted 'Beach'.

Parking in Budleigh can be difficult during peak season, so arrive early if you can. Bear in mind that the naturist beach is to the right as you are looking out to sea, so you may want to try and park at the western end of town.

As the cliffs start there is a beach cafe (ideal for refreshments) then about 300m along the beach there is an official sign saying clothing optional from this point. In reality the naturists start some way before this sign, maybe about 150-200m from the cafe. There have been some problems with the local authorities over this, however naturists remain defiant and the police did receive quite a grilling over their 'interference'. Though to avoid potential problems it is advisable not to be nude until after the official sign.

Satvav: The post code for Rolle Road is EX9 6JZ.

Extract from "The World's Best Nude Beaches and Resorts", published in 2007 and provided by Nick Mayhew-Smith:

A long wide pebble shore backed by dramatic sheer cliffs of red sandstone. The nude beach here is officially recognised as clothing optional by the local authority. The pebbles are large so take something comfortable to lie on and footwear suitable for swimming. Delightful scenery and good access from the town centre make it a popular spot at this pretty seaside resort.

Access to the beach and Naturism

At the end of the road, walk down Steamer Steps to the shore and turn right (west) for 500 metres to get to the naturist area. Toilets by the steps. Limited parking nearby, but more availability within a short walk.
