We fell in love with the South West of France 15 years ago and have lived in the pretty town of Marseillan for five years. The quality of life here is a big contrast to the hustle and bustle of our lives in the UK. It is difficult not to fall in love, when never-ending blue skies merge seamlessly into the iridescent waters of the turquoise Mediterranean Sea that surrounds us.
The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful and sometimes we have to pinch ourselves - maybe all of this is a dream. The flamboyant Flamingos visit our lagoon twice a year and are an amazing sight to behold. A favourite visitor to our garden is the colourful Hoopoe with its crown of feathers and a delightful call, who, like us, loves to sunbathe! We enjoy evening aperitifs on our terrace, whilst watching the antics of the flocks of migrating birds playfully darting into the water pools and long reeds of the nature reserve behind our villa.
The stunning Mediterranean beaches of the South of France, many of which are Naturist, are minutes away. One of our favourites is the outstanding Robinson beach at Marseillan Plage; crystal clear, warm turquoise water with small shoals of tiny fish swimming at your feet, miles of silver sand, and an array of colourful sea shells. This is not an ‘official’ Naturist beach, but for a dedicated Naturist beach experience, our favourites are Cap d’Agde and Serignan. These beaches provide widely contrasting experiences and we are regular visitors to both.
Cap d’Agde Village Naturiste is a private and gated resort and has a fabulous two km long wide golden beach edging the crystal blue sea. The beach is lined by lively beach bars and excellent restaurants, it is ideal for those who enjoy a vibrant atmosphere with a variety of activities on offer. The village is International and the Naturist experience is immediate once you enter the village. In the last couple of years, it’s had some much needed investment including a pretty pedestrian friendly promenade at the Marina, where you can sit in a bar or restaurant and watch the world go by.
Serignan Naturist Plage has a closer to nature feel. Its fine sandy each slopes gently down into the turquoise sea and is very safe for swimming. There is a sign dividing the beach between Naturists and ‘textiles’ but nobody pays any attention to it with everyone sharing the lovely beach together. The beach is a five minute walk through the dunes from the large, free car park. The beach itself has no facilities, so a trip to the nearby typically French town of Serignan with its traditional restaurants where you can enjoy a reasonably priced ‘Plat du jour’ accompanied by a glass of local wine, makes a great addition to your day.
The Mediterranean climate is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, cycling and hiking with average temperatures in the mid 20 degrees in May and September, peaking in July and August to over 30 degrees. Our region has an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, so no wonder everyone here is always smiling.
A dramatic symbol on our landscape is the iconic red-roofed lighthouse which stands at the end of the Canal du Midi, in past times protecting the lives of the fishermen from harm. We see the lighthouse and stunning sunsets on our evening dog walks along the scenic path at the side of the Thau Lagoon. It is the second largest salt water Lagoon in France. This beautiful walk ends at our town of Marseillan with its harbourside bars, restaurants and lively artisan markets.
The Sunday Times described our town of Marseillan as ‘the last unspoilt port on the French Mediterranean’. It’s home to the world famous Noilly Prat whose Martini cocktail, ‘shaken and not stirred’ is the favourite drink of James Bond. For those of you who share our passion for good food, Marseillan is a wonderful place, surrounded by vineyards and the waters of the Thau Lagoon with its famous oysters and over 20 excellent restaurants. Our location gives easy access to the dramatic vineyards of the Herault region which produce great wines.
Come and join us and enjoy some of those 300 days of sunshine and a glass of wine! Our beautiful Villa overlooks the stunning Thau Lagoon and the Canal du Midi. We have secure gated accommodation, a separately accessed apartment and private free secure parking. We have a fabulous secluded Mediterranean garden with noble palms reaching majestically out over our swimming pool. The spacious apartment with free Wifi and UK Freesat TV is ideal for two people. We are dog lovers and have two beautiful French Barbets, so a pre-requisite is that our guests must like dogs.
Travelling to Marseillan is straight forward, we are 20 minutes from Beziers Airport and 50 minutes from Montpellier Airport. If you prefer to take the Ferry, the quickest and easiest option is Brittany ferries to Santander or Bilbao, we are a six hour drive from the latter.
