Petersfield Open Air Swimming Pool in Hampshire is having a Great British Skinny Dip - our second one of 2024. Even better, the pool is heated to 27 degrees (always welcome in our changeable climate!), and there’s a café serving hot and cold drinks and snacks and a BBQ.
As I have said in other news stories, we're always talking about how wonderful it would be to secure new venues for nude recreation and here's one that usually entertains people with costumes but happy to host nude swimmers for the second year. There was a point, when my partner Dave and I were about 20 minutes away from Cwm Weeg Gardens near Newtown, Wales, when the rain was bucketing down and the car thermometer read 12 degrees, and we wondered whether we were losing our minds. Walk around naked in this?! But we persevered – and are we glad we did.
By the time we made it to the car park and enjoyed a warm drink and some cake with our companions, the sun was coming out. Although many of the 37 walkers started out clothed or partially clothed, it didn’t take long for most of us to strip off.
Cwm Weeg means “place in a wooded valley,” owner Wolfgang told me. And that’s exactly where we were, high up on a hill with paths that snake through a densely wooded valley. There’s a late Medieval farmhouse in three acres of landscaped gardens set in 20 acres of woodland, with wildflowers everywhere.
Wolfgang and his partner Kingsley have lived there for 38 years, and they’ve built several other buildings on the site, and a terrace where walkers can have a chat and refreshments. The gardens are dotted with sculptures and other interesting features – including a secret grotto.
One particularly unusual building is a tower – still very much under construction – which will be Wolfgang’s and Kingsley’s grave. It will be covered by a crypt and, above that, a library, because, Wolfgang said, he loves books.
I asked him why he had agreed to host a BN Naked Heart Walk and he said, “We’re very open and accept everybody.” When they lived in Germany, they enjoyed nude bathing and were part of the Naturism scene. But things have changed since then, he noted. Young people aren’t as interested in the lifestyle, and, since the covid lockdowns, there’s been a complete reversal in attitudes in Germany, with Brits becoming more tolerant of people they don’t agree with than Germans.
The NHW also attracted a couple of newbies. Ian has been a BN member for several years but is new to public Naturism, he told me. When the Cwm Weeg NHW popped up in his area, he decided to give it a try. “I loved it,” he said – and is now planning more naked public events.
Naturism is completely new to Ian’s partner, Kath, but she came along because she wanted to see what appeals to him. She didn’t undress, preferring to dip her toe in “little by little” when they go abroad to a warmer place.
All in all, a smashing outing, and even the weather cooperated. To top it off, this Naked Heart Walk raised £465 for the British Heart Foundation, along with £360 for the gardens!

We turn our attention inward once again next Monday 8 July for the Forum Live and meet our esteemed IT team. I'll be speaking to volunteers John Weir and Steve Froggatt about the huge range of work they do keeping BN alive and thriving online.
Amongst other things we'll be looking at the various sites we operate and maintain, the daily challenges and problems they have to overcome (they always do), both obvious and behind-the-scenes, impending software-platform updates to this website and the work that will be involved, and our project to revise and simplify BN calendars and event listings. We'll also hear about volunteers already recruited to the team and the many vacancies still left to fill.

I had the pleasure, coincidentally, of being the first Warden on duty at the re-opening of BN: Sunfolk last weekend, writes BN Chairman Colin Taylor, along with my fellow Warden, Paul Rodgers. There was still lots to do when I arrived on Thursday evening ready to welcome our first visitors on Friday when the gates reopened at 10 o’clock. Volunteers were on site to help, the ever-present Chris Mills who delighted in getting on the ride-on mower to give the grass a once-over and Paul who had been helping our new Housekeeper, Hazel to hoover, dust and polish the new facilities. Yes, we have grass, still somewhat patchy but the sight of the greenness across the pod area and sunbathing lawns was beautiful in the full sun we had on Saturday.
The most common phrase as we accompanied visitors down the path towards the Pavillion building was “Wow!” The expanse of light wood across the renamed clubhouse building with extended decking and huge bifold doors was indeed a wonderful sight..
We opened some “bubbly” to mark the occasion at lunch on Friday. There was a mixture of newcomers to Naturist venues, seasoned visitors like Peter, volunteers and later, our first legacy members (members of the Sunfolk Society), who were trying out the new glamping pods for the weekend. Visitors were local and from farther afield from Coventry, Kent and Plymouth. One more-local day visitor loved it so much that after giving her a copy of the Guide to Naturism was back the following day, her BN Membership completed to get more of the same.
Saturday was our busiest day of the weekend and I was glad to have had a second Warden to help welcome visitors and give them a guided tour of the facilities, including instruction on how to use the new boiling water tap and new electronic POS terminal for our cashless digital shop “honesty box.” The new hot tub and sauna were in use and the swimming pool was looking great. Our glamping pods were used and went down well. Sunday saw quite a number of legacy members attend and I think all appreciated the work we have done to improve the facilities to create a more modern phase in the life of the Sun Folk Society venue which we now have guardianship of.
Opening weekend came at the end of our mini-summer and it was great to see visitors able once more to come and enjoy the sun and facilities of our upgraded site.

They speak about the long history of the magazine, and the various forms it has taken under the different editors over the last 100 plus years. It was through being a proof reader for H&E in the noughties that led Sam to discover naturism in the first place. Things go much better when we all work together and British Naturism members have always had the support of volunteers in their region. It's changed over the years, but we now have seven regions covering the country, with hard-working volunteers putting on events, making representation to authorities and others, handling queries from members, and more.
So, how do you find out what's going on? Well, a good start is to visit the regional news pages on our website. You'll find regularly updated news stories, announcements and information about events, reports of events gone by and more. You can also sign up for a monthly newsletter from each region and visit the calendar and use the drop down menu to find events in your region.
And if you want to offer to help, I am sure every region will be pleased to hear from you!
This incredibly beautiful venue was again booked to host a ‘Naked Heart Walk’ over the weekend by British Naturism, a repeat of the successful event at the same venue almost exactly twelve months ago, with tickets priced at £15 - £35 via Eventbrite, to include donations to our Charity partners the British Heart Foundation (BHF), who also supplied medals for completing the walk.
There was an increase in ticket sales over 2023 and we raised £1175 for BHF. The weather was drizzly, but undeterred, most of us stripped off and carried just an umbrella. New to Naturism attendees said that they had enjoyed what was a thoroughly exhilarating experience and they were instantly converted to the freedom of walking naked. We will certainly be back next June – do feel free to join us!
Not long to go now before our next BN members' group holiday takes place in Gran Canaria in late August/early September not far from the amazing sand dunes of Maspalomas (pictured).

Next week, Monday 1 July, BN's Women's Officer Helen Berriman takes the chair and will talk to Andee Rodgers.
Andee is a woman's advocate and creator of the Women One Word (WOW) campaign in the US. She is the Women In Nude Recreation (WINR) chair for the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) an organization that, like BN, protects, promotes, provides and preserves nude recreation. In recent months, she and her husband Tom have visited many US clubs taking the essence of the WOW campaign and WINR—it became known as the ImPerfect tour. Andee starts by sharing her story and encourages others to share theirs. Meanwhile, Tom talks to the men about incorrect attitudes and mistakes made by males towards their female counterpart. One objective was to make it easier for single women to travel to clubs and be met with the right support.
Sounds wonderful - join the session on the night over in the BN shop. Remember these Community Online events are open to members of non-UK Naturist federations too.
There are so many fantastic – and downright quirky - Naturist adventures coming up in SANER (Scotland and Northern England Region) that you won’t want to miss any of them! Here’s a reminder.
Did you know that, along with BN, the Forth Road bridge is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year? Why not celebrate both milestones in the buff with a 13 July cruise on the Forth? You can preview the bridges here.
On 27 July, get your clothes off and your sea-legs on and sail along the Northumberland coast around the Farne Islands. Keep an eye out for sea birds, seals – and, who knows, maybe even merfolk!
On 28 July - changed date - the original visit was postponed owing to illness at the venue but we've rescheduled and back by popular demand, is a visit to Alnwick Gardens. Enjoy the original Harry Potter backdrop as you meander naturally naked through the gardens. Take care in the Poison garden in case any of Professor Sprout’s repotted Mandrakes are lurking! Play in the garden water features.
And last – but certainly not least – is the 24-26 August most northerly naturist festival, at TANDO club. Expect fireworks, music and light shows or just enjoy the festival vibe, naturally nude. If you can't make the event, why not contact TANDO for a trial visit or to book a short break there?

You know that temperatures are soaring over Britain when at least one national newspaper prints a picture of a young woman sunbathing in her bra and pants during her lunch hour, taking advantage of the weather and adapting to her circumstances.
Or perhaps she's using a modicum of common sense? When it's cold, it's intuitive - and socially acceptable - to keep putting on layers until you are warm enough. So, on days like today when it's sweltering and we are sweating in our clothes, feeling mighty uncomfortable, irritable and unable to concentrate, it should be equally acceptable to do the opposite; remove layers until you feel cool again. That probably means all layers, until all that protects you is your own skin. Surely it's not just Naturists that see the sense in that?
Sadly, decades of social conditioning about what's 'right' or is 'appropriate behaviour' (and what's not) in our society possibly mean that the woman in that picture consciously kept her underwear on when it would have been more sensible to take it off too. We're all (broadly) the same underneath and yet we cling to small strips of fabric even when we don't need to for the sake of 'modesty'. The purpose of clothes is to keep us warm and dry, and you don't need either aspect during a heatwave. You may be reading this and thinking of the social status conferred by what we wear, but do you really need that artificial boost to the ego when you are relaxing in the sun?
Naturism is also perfectly legal. Sunbathing naked in your garden is an easy way to start - and so what if the neighbours can see? How can anyone argue with your desire to cool off in the most sensible way?
There's plenty going on in Naturism in the UK and there's a lot more activity than just sunbathing. Millions of people around the world have discovered the wonderful feeling that comes from spending time without clothes, come and join them. Nothing's better!
Be in the room where it happens! We're looking for a Minutes Secretary
As the Hamilton musical score says, "be in the room where it happens". We are of course referring (in the main) to a virtual room where the BN Executive Committee meets. So why not be at the forefront of what's going on inside BN .... by taking the minutes of Executive Committee meetings?
As the Minutes Secretary, you will have experience of minute-taking, committee work and procedures; be well organised and have an eye for detail; have good listening and written communication skills and above all, impartiality, fairness and the ability to maintain confidentiality and be sensitive to others’ feelings.
The role will require about 6 hours every month, including attendance at Executive Committee meetings (usually held via Zoom on the last Thursday of every month, except August and December).

All good things come to an end but we certainly went out with a bang. There was a moment yesterday when Nudefest resembled the world’s best summer fête - queues of people at the food stalls, the benches outside the bar filled with chatter, piano music emanating from the Magic Teapot, groups attending talks in marquees, creations being crafted from willow branches, the sauna and hot tub area attracting those who needed some downtime, a gong bath meditation session by the Zen tent, a two-horse-drawn cart touring the perimeter, and the ‘showground’ filled with masses of naked people creating a human mandala.
Amongst another good crop of people arriving just for the day, local singer-songwriter Anna got in touch and delivered an ad-hoc set, singing naked for the first time. The evening entertainment was one of the best of the week with singing group Last Orders (pictured)—six guys, including Nudefest organiser Mark Walsh—belting out popular classics that we could all sing along to.
Thanks to all guests, visitors, suppliers, entertainers and performers—and especially volunteers—for coming together to make such an amazing event. Keep an eye out for booking opening for Nudefest 2025, 7 -13 July (yes, July).
But it hasn’t quite ended. Thorney Lakes will continue to be a Naturist venue until 10am on Monday, with the bar open today and a quiz tonight.
I'm sorry to say that the clouds rolled over in the late afternoon yesterday and it even rained for a short while, but (cliché alert) it didn't dampen our enthusiasm. Most people popped on a cardie but the wonderful activities continued including a large number of walkers on our naked hike and a big contingent visiting a local cider farm. It's not a music festival, but there is plenty of it with recorded, live and acoustic sets happening through the day and late into the night. Numbers were swelled with a steady flow of day visitors too.
Sadly, it's our last full day today—where has the time gone?—and it's the biggest and best, with more talks, crafts and workshops, sports and games (I realise I am yet to mention the huddle of runners who skirt the site in the early mornings), fitness, meditation and yoga, horse and cart rides, dog show, slip 'n' slide, a hands-on opportunity with snakes, bugs and spiders, and artist Aleksandra Karpowicz creating a human mandala. Music (and dancing) will come from the Disco Ceilidh, and live entertainment from The Drag Battle and the Last Orders Pub Party, one of whose group members you might well recognise...
Sun's up, bright and hot and so cardies off and let's get underway...
It's a good job that this website doesn't limit the number of words that can be used - there is so much to say! We had another fabulous day in hot sunshine yesterday. There was a time when you'd never read 'sun-cream' and 'Nudefest' in the same sentence, but not now. Sun's up already today too.
After our profile was raised on national TV first thing, guests immersed themselves in the activities again yesterday enjoying the relative peace of talks and walks, the exuberance of the holi paint fight and the energy of the Old Time Sailors amongst others.
It's going to be packed again today - there's a fishing competition in Thorney Lakes' lakes, another foraging talk and walk, two Women in Naturism workshops - one for women and the other for everyone, a a Naturist walk across the fields to another Cider Farm, crafts, life drawing, three yoga sessions, three acoustic music sessions, two quizzes, Edible insects talk (and taste), karaoke, and live music tonight from BN event favourites 'ABBA Reunion'. It's worth reiterating that campers and day visitors can also avail themselves of massage, the sauna and hot tub area, sports and games, catering vans, the bar, the coffee shop and the Magic Teapot throughout the day. So nice to see more suppliers and entertainers deciding to be naked with us.

On Friday, 21 June, the Summer Solstice, intrepid people around the globe will throw off their clothes and celebrate World Naked Hiking Day. It’s a fantastic way for Naturists and those who want to experience the joy of being outside in the buff to cheer the arrival of summer. There is plenty of activity in the UK!
BN’s Eastern Region walks co-ordinator Andrew Roch said:
‘The aim of the campaign is to get people to realise that being naked is not abnormal. Much of the naked hiking we do is tied to the premise of supporting a charity but World Naked Hiking Day for me is to just get out there and enjoy being naked in nature for the sheer pleasure of doing so.
‘It has all sorts of benefits, including well being, the sense of freedom, taking exercise, and allowing the body to make up some of the vitamin D deficiency that so many people in the UK suffer from or take medication to correct. On one or two of the walks there is also the opportunity for the odd skinny dip!
Andrew Welch, spokesman for BN said:
‘In the UK, Naturists including BN and its members have worked hard to clarify the law and educate people to the simple fact that being naked in public is not illegal. The law is clear that a naked person must have the intention to cause alarm and distress. If they are unclothed simply to enjoy the health and well-being benefits and feel the warmth of the sun on their skin, no such intention exists. Experience shows that people encountering a group of naked walkers might be surprised or amused but also often intrigued, asking many questions.

It was another lovely hot day at Nudefest yesterday with plenty going on and that chilled, community atmosphere was all around. Everyone will have their own highlight, but the crowd of people listening and dancing to Razzomo (we love the way Lucy and James strip off to perform) in the field in the sunshine, the Magic Teapot (we love the way the team strip off to perform) welcoming everyone to listen or to play /sing themselves, and our comedy night in a packed Cirque pavilion raising the rafters with our laughter (we loved the way Javier stripped off to perform) would be among most people's. Oh, I did I mention the joy of lazing around in the sunshine?
Today will kick off with national attention being paid. Watch Lorraine on ITV around 9.05am for our live broadcast and the film they made yesterday. Thanks to everyone who was willing to be involved, even if we proved that Naturists can't play volleyball even with twenty players on each side!
The fun then carries on with a craft session, two talks including Free Wilders - foragers Colin and Sadie with the addition of a guided walk around the lake, fitness, yoga (I believe it's International Yoga Day today), gong bath, sports and games, karaoke, a wine tasting and a holi paint skirmish. The circus comes to town with two sessions, and we're looking forward to hearing the amazing, energetic Old Time Sailors and a UV party tonight with the 'Noughty Nineties" band.
