News and articles about BN and the wonderful world of Naturism
Despite the dismal weather, it’s time to think about the Great British Skinny Dip (GBSD) again. This is its 9th year and - even more exciting - 2024 is British Naturism’s 60th anniversary. Time to strip off and get in the water!

First, let’s remind ourselves why the GBSD has been going for so long and why it’s drawing ever more interest.
From mental health and body positivity to raising your heart rate and just feeling the rush of being alive, there are lots of health benefits to being naked. The Great British Skinny Dip raises funds for the nation’s largest heart charity, the British Heart Foundation, which helps power the nation’s heartbeats. Let’s face it – it’s just fun!
Team GBSD set a target to list 250 GBSD events for 2024 and contacted many venues. Not surprisingly, there was an incredibly positive response - and we now have nearly 450 swims listed on our dedicated website greatbritishskinnydip.co.uk. Don’t forget that you can also sign up via that site for our GBSD newsletter.

We’re also looking to create more GBSD events at new venues this year. If you know of any venues that we could approach to host a skinny dip and/or you need advice for making approaches,  please make contact with us at: skinnydip@greatbritishskinnydip.co.uk.

Another fruitful connection could be with wild swimming groups following our successful Autumn venture at Blackburn, Lancashire with the ‘Lancashire Otters.’ There are reported to be over 3.5 thousand open water groups nationwide, with women making up over 70% of members.

Also on the agenda: another ‘Great British Synchronised Skinny Dip,’ on a date in the summer yet to be decided, as a national fundraiser for the British Heart Foundation and to make it a no-brainer for venues to join in with minimal effort.

We’ve got a lot on our plate – and we’re looking at you, the Naturist community, to help us make these ideas a reality!

Anyone who uses the internet regularly will know that you can't get away from people and companies trying to sell you things. There are some sites that feel like 99% advertising and 1% actual content.
We also feature advertisements (although amongst some great content...) across the range of BN platforms but we want to encourage you to check them out. Advertising space is taken by Naturists for Naturists. Let’s support each other and make sure those businesses thrive!
Don’t forget to look at the listings on our holidays page.
Our friends will really appreciate you clicking on their adverts on this site and visiting their websites. We know they are all ready, willing and able to handle your enquiries about the holidays you may take in the future.
Thanks to all of them for the financial support they give us which helps us in the furtherance of Naturism in the UK.
If you are a potential advertiser, here are the details of how to advertise.

Join me again next Monday (15 January) as I talk to Jason Hatherill, owner of the pre-eminent Naturist resort in the Canary Islands, Magnolias Natura.
Jason was born in the UK and was a teacher in the east end of London for 23 years.  In 2015 he moved to Gran Canaria in search of something different and a quieter life. In 2016 he became the co-owner and Director of Mareu Hoteles and leads a team of thirty staff in two holiday resorts one of which is Magnolias Natura - a nude resort since 2002. Jason believes in getting the basic things right – friendly staff, cleanliness, competitively priced accommodation set in attractive gardens with good quality food and beverages. He is a member of British Naturism.
We'll hear more about the resort and its history, its facilities and why it - and Gran Canaria - make a great place for a Naturist holiday. We'll be treated to some images too.
Magnolias Natura has also been a destination for BN Member Holidays with another to come in the Spring of 2024 which is sold out, but we'll be launching a new one soon for the early Autumn!
All BN online 'community' events are open to all BN members and members of overseas federations. Join the session here.
If you're not a member, come and find out how to change that - and seriously enhance your life in the process!
We're pleased to let you know that the British Naturism National Swimming Gala will take place in Hertfordshire on Saturday 20th April. Booking will be open soon, but please mark your diaries!
This year, the swimming competition (for which you can qualify to represent your country!) will also include other activities - our new 'Festival of Sport'. Details will be announced soon.

Talking about Naturism and being open about our involvement in it helps to normalise social nudity.  Many people report feeling relieved that people around them know - and can be a real confidence-booster.  Bringing the subject up and knowing what to say can still sometimes be difficult and so we have created this set of suggestions to help you.
In Part 1 we identified a range of ways that you can introduce Naturism into conversation if you wish.  Now, in Part 2, we cover the sort of positive messages to include when trying to explain the appeal of Naturism to people you meet.

Positive messages to engage people’s interest
We practise Naturism because it is fun and good for us, that is the message we need to pass on.  People may challenge your choice, but you don’t need to deal with that until it happens.  Many people just want to hear the interesting stories so keep it positive and keep it simple.

Naturism is Fun
“A change is as good as a rest.”
Taking off our clothes and letting go of our day-to-day troubles just makes us feel good.  Most people want to reclaim their freedom, reconnect with nature, and socialise with those with similar attitudes.  Naturism gives us all of that.  Furthermore, people often enjoy the excitement of doing something new, that is why most people have skinny dipping on their bucket list.

Naturism is Normal
“If we were supposed to be naked, we’d have been born that way ... oh.”
Naturists are just ordinary people who choose not to wear clothes when the weather and circumstances are appropriate.  Other than being nude, our activities are no different from what most people do in their leisure time.  We’re not anti-clothes, we just know they are not always essential.

Why get Dressed to get Wet?
We all know that struggling with a wet costume in a swimming pool changing room is a miserable experience.  Swimmers and sunbathers wear little more than we do, so costumes are worn by tradition, rather than for a logical reason.  Everyone should try skinny-dipping once in their lives, once you’ve tried it, you’ll never want to wear a costume again.

Naturism is Good for You
Naturism makes us feel better about our own appearance. There is no such thing as the perfect body and we’re all unique.  Spending time naked helps us de-stress and improves our mental health – this has been proven in scientific studies!  Spending just 40 minutes in a nude environment makes people happy, and living with a relaxed attitude to nudity increases our self-confidence.

You don’t need the body of a film star, model or a super-fit athlete to have worth.  In a Naturist place you soon realise that nobody is looking at you, and that we have people of every possible body shape and age.

Naturism Reinforces Equality and Respect
The media continually shows us images of the “perfect” body, it can be a real blow to our own body confidence.  Naturists quickly find that nobody cares if they don’t have the body of a supermodel, so the problem goes away.  Furthermore, women, in particular, are objectified throughout their lives as a result of society’s obsession with appearance.  Women find that they are not harassed, feel more confident and safer in Naturist environments because Naturism is built on respect and the fantasy of the perfect body has disappeared.

Naturism Builds Trust
In everyday life we profile people by their clothes and accessories and, in turn, hide our own personalities behind our appearance.  When we are naked, we are more open and get to know people for who they are, not what they are.  Therefore, Naturists are often more willing to engage in conversation and welcome newcomers, and strong friendships grow quickly.

Naturism is Popular
Millions of people around the world have discovered the fun and self-confidence to be found in Naturism.  British Naturism’s IPSOS survey (2022) revealed that there are almost seven million Naturists in the UK.  There are thousands of holiday resorts and other places to go to around the world.  One fifth of people have been skinny dipping and one third have sunbathed or spent time at home naked - even if they don’t think of it as ’Naturism’.  It is the same thing and the label really doesn’t matter.

Naturism Benefits all of Society
Naturism is built on respect and most Naturists are keen to reconnect to nature – the clue is in the name!  That means many things Naturists do benefit everybody.  Naked charity walks for the British Heart Foundation have been running for years.  Many Naturists support wildlife and protect the environment by taking part in naked beach cleans or conservation work.  Finally, Naturists campaign for freedom of choice, advancing equality and the promotion of respect across society.  The campaigning work improves the quality of life for everybody, not just Naturists.

Join host Helen Berriman, BN's Women's Officer, for a new episode of the podcast from British Naturism, dedicated to celebrating and empowering women in the Naturist community. Our podcast is created by women for women, although we warmly invite men to join us and listen as well.
In each episode, we delve into insightful conversations, exploring various aspects of Naturism through the lens of womens' experiences. Whether you are a seasoned Naturist, new to the way of life or just intrigued, we aim to educate and inspire. We highlight the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of women in Naturism. Promoting body acceptance and self love, we explore how women across the planet have shed their clothes and freed up their minds, leading them toward a more fulfilling life in all areas; one that no longer keeps them restricted - emotionally, mentally, physically, and in all other ways.
Episode two is available to listen to now and features Fiona Discombe a long-term Naturist, hotelier and nude health campaigner.

Have you ever wanted an otherworldly Naturist experience?  On the 4th February, that is exactly what we will be doing as British Naturism takes over Tank Space, the UK’s foremost water photography studio.  Tank Space features a 10,000L dive tank where you can be photographed underwater and a 380sqft rain area so you can literally go dancing naked in the rain, but the rain is warm and it will be captured on camera.  Based near Mansfield, Tank Space is frequently used for music videos and television production, so this is a once in a lifetime Naturist experience.
If you want a photograph of you that is unlike any other you have, British Naturism’s official photographers will be on hand to capture images to be passed on to you.  If you are a photographer, you can book to photograph a friend or partner, or use one of our volunteer model’s who will be available.  In either case, British Naturism’s photographers will be around to offer advice on setting up your camera should you need it.
Whether you are in front of or behind the lens, you should come away with some wonderful souvenirs of a unique experience.
Places can be booked through the shop and are expected to sell quickly, so act fast to join us.

We like to bring you news stories of forthcoming events - it spreads the word, encourages more people to book and shows just how vibrant the Naturist scene is in the UK. However - I'm happy to say - there are far too many to promote them all individually and so here is a complete list of all the events happening over just the next couple of weeks. Enjoy! And don't forget that we are always looking for reports on great gatherings for the magazine and elsewhere...

...and we're back... next Monday, 8th January, I will have the pleasure of talking to the BN Naked Fitness team. We'll hear about how the classes became an instant hit during lockdown with Naturists from around the world delighted to feel part of a community (and keep fit and healthy) from wherever they were. We'll talk to class leaders about the sessions they run and how YOU can get involved.
In the meantime, don't forget 'Super Saturday' on 6th January when you can sample all the classes for free!
Join our session on the night over in the BN shop

Talking about Naturism and being open about our involvement in it helps to normalise social nudity.  Many people report feeling relieved that people around them know - and can be a real confidence-booster.  Bringing the subject up and knowing what to say can still sometimes be difficult and so we have created this set of suggestions to help you. It includes three parts - look out for parts 2 and 3 soon!
Part 1: Good ways to introduce Naturism into conversation
Here are a few ideas that have been found to have a good effect.
Charity – Asking friends to sponsor you for charity is an easy opening because people often raise money by being sponsored to do something that is unusual or challenging.  All of British Naturism’s charity events are open to the general public and so if you get a positive reaction, you could invite people to join in!
Holidays – Everyone talks about their holidays and people are willing to listen.  Experience shows that people are even more interested when you tell them you found a nude beach while there.  It is well known that nudity is the norm at European spas and on many foreign beaches, so it may not surprise the people you tell as much as you think.
Signs and Slogans – Most of us have ornaments around our homes or slogans on our clothing.  References to Naturism in those signs or slogans creates the opportunity for friends to ask questions if they are curious.
One-to-one – Some people are intimidated in a group and find it easier to be open in conversation with just one other person.  If that is you, those heart-to-heart conversations can be a good opportunity to share your experience of Naturism.  You don’t need to “sell” Naturism, it’s all about ordinary, everyday conversation and sharing your experiences with a friend.
Social Media – We post all sorts of things on our social media, so it is easy to make references to Naturism or living naked.  Friends will often ask questions and start the conversation themselves if they are interested and simply ignore the posts if not.
Naturism is Fun – You can refer to Naturism in almost joking terms.  If the people you are with react negatively, you laugh it off and move on.  But if they react positively, even in joking terms themselves, you have just found common ground and a conversation that you can develop.
Negative Reactions – The most common reason people worry about being open about Naturism is fear of a negative reaction, whether from friends, family, or their employer.  That can happen, but it is far rarer than we fear.  Openness removes the risk of it being viewed as a “dirty secret” so is often safer.  Confidence that we are living a positive and respectable life can carry us a long way.

Finally, be aware of people’s reactions and adapt your approach to the circumstances.  You will notice that most of the suggested approaches put your audience in control, so you don’t fall out with people by pushing a point.  We are looking to share the best aspects of our lives with friends, not force others to accept our point of view.
Part 2 and Part 3 of 'How to talk about Naturism' can be found on these links.

2024 is here and it is a big year for Naturism and British Naturism.  This year is the 60th anniversary of British Naturism and the centenary of club Naturism in the UK.  There is a lot going on this year to mark these milestones. Look out later this week for a news story about our big 2024 events!
But we don’t have to wait for summer to get involved! Naturism is about coming together as a community to make our lives better by shedding our clothes. To support that goal, we have created Challenge 60!  The aim is to try new things – or revisit activities we have done before, so we all have more fun and make new friends.  Challenges include sporting challenges and social challenges that could be achieved at our events, as well as in many other ways.  They include challenges to complete outside of formal events for those who want to take the initiative and also include challenges you can complete without leaving the house for those who prefer a quieter life.  There are also many challenges to share the joy you have found in Naturism and encourage friends to give it a go.  If you are a long-standing Naturist, this a great chance to have fun with friends.  If you are new to Naturism or not even a Naturist at all and just curious, this is an opportunity to dip your toe in for the first time.  The challenge list is attached below, you will find some things you can already do and if you want to do more you could attend one of our events or join British Naturism to gain more opportunities.
For those who are already members, there is the online challenge log, which is now open. You can download the log book from this news story - see below.  Here you can record your achievements and see how others are doing and compete with friends.  You will see that some challenges are first-time experiences while others are more accessible to those with a network of Naturist friends.  Therefore, you should find opportunities on the list whether you are new to Naturism or have been involved all your life.  We have also created a dedicated members’ gallery section to share your images of you completing challenges, and we will look to feature some of the success stories in BN magazine.
2024 looks like being a good year, we hope you will be part of it.

Here's to the future...
The purpose of British Naturism is to protect and promote Naturism.  Such a simple statement is easy to communicate but lacks the specific detail we need to guide our activities.  We can expand on the sentiment by defining both the overall Vision and more detailed Mission of British Naturism as follows:
British Naturism Vision Statement
The Vision of British Naturism is that:
Naturism is widely accepted throughout the UK. The benefits of Naturism are understood and the opportunities to practise Naturism and the numbers doing so are increasing.
British Naturism Mission Statement
The Mission of British Naturism is to:
1.    act as the national body responsible for the stewardship of Naturism in the United Kingdom and to represent the views of Naturists among local, national and international opinion formers;
2.    demonstrate the values of Naturism, set standards of behaviour and provide a safe environment for everyone to enjoy Naturism;
3.    promote Naturism and social nudity to the public, organisations and society at large;
4.    have a positive profile nationally, regionally and within local communities;
5.    provide information, advice and guidance about the practice and benefits of Naturism and social nudity;
6.    create, support and/or provide opportunities for individuals, couples and families to experience and practise Naturism through local Naturist clubs, group activities, events and social networking;
7.    build an inclusive community that empowers individuals who share the Naturist philosophy to interact with likeminded people;
8.    advance the health and wellbeing benefits of Naturism, including the benefits to body positivity, emotional, physical and mental health;
9.    promote membership and support the retention of existing members;
10.    provide, promote and manage opportunities for members to volunteer within the organisation;
11.    have a positive impact upon the lives of those with whom we engage;
It is reassuring that these objectives have changed very little over recent years or even decades, bringing confidence that they reflect our long-term philosophy.

Recent discussion concluded that all are important and that they are interconnected so each is needed to achieve the others.  There was strong consensus on the top three objectives for the next couple of years, and actions are being taken to address them:
A)    Create opportunities to practise Naturism (6)
a.    The reopening of Sunfolk in 2024 will provide a direct opportunity for participation.
b.    The club network around the country is much larger than a single location and work is to be undertaken to enhance the role of clubs.
c.    Events are perhaps the easiest experience to “pick up”, therefore the events portfolio will continue to grow with particular focus on geographical distribution.
d.    Swimming is the most common Naturist activity, therefore the Great British Skinny Dip will expand and provide more swimming opportunities.
e.    Opportunities for individuals are equally important; the Challenge 60 initiative will hopefully spur people to find opportunities as part of the community.
B)    Advance health, wellbeing and body-positivity (8)
a.    The portfolio of sporting activities is to be expanded, most notably through the evolution of the National Swimming Gala into a Festival of Sport.
b.    Work will continue to secure new venues for Naked Heart Walks.
c.    The EveryBody initiative launched successfully in 2023 and the template will be built upon, leaning heavily on the value of positive body image, and combining physical and mental health.
d.    New social media approaches will be used to communicate the wellbeing benefits of Naturism to non-Naturists.
e.    New opportunities to promote how Naturism can provide a holistic route to good health have been identified through trade shows.
C)    Stewardship of Naturism (1)
a.    A series of prospective Campaigns to normalise and increase the visibility of Naturism will run through 2024.
b.    Our presence on previously unused platforms, such as through the new Women in Naturism podcasts will be used to exert influence.
c.    Attempts will be made to forge even stronger relationships with groups with objectives sympathetic with those of British Naturism.
d.    With one of our former Directors already appointed Vice President of the International Naturist Federation and other opportunities to assume positions of influence before us, we will work to support the current progress at the international level.
e.    Opportunities to protect and promote Naturist values in the political arena will be sought.

Together, the work in the three focus areas will advance all 11 missions and provide a roadmap for Naturism to continue to grow over the next few years.  We can all be part of making this happen, be that through getting involved in the new campaigns, participating in something like Challenge 60, or just joining us at events.  So, whatever your appetite we hope you will jump in with us.
PLEASE CHECK BEFORE YOU GO THAT AN EVENT IS GOING AHEAD OVER THE HOLIDAY PERIOD.

Continuing our theme this week of exciting things to look forward to in 2024, we're delighted to launch a brand new event, in a new location for Naturism, to celebrate 60 years of British Naturism!
Booking is now open for a four-night break in September at Baskerville Hall on the Welsh/Herefordshire border. There's 130 acres of grounds, a swimming pool, a sauna and even a night club! It's also the first time (that I can recall) that a BN event offers guests the choice of hotel accommodation and camping. There are even dormitories so we can make sure every taste and pocket is catered for.
Expect the usual BN event buzz - plenty of daytime activities and live entertainment at night.
Find out more and reserve your place over in the BN shop
I know you're all eager to hear news of how the redevelopment of the BN site at Sunfolk, just north of London is progressing and to hear about plans for 2024, and so next Monday 18 December we'll be dedicating the last Forum Live of the year to that very subject.
I hope to be introducing a panel of BN members involved with the project and future planning, bringing their expertise and knowledge, and covering past, present and future of this landmark BN project that all of us - and Naturism in the UK - will benefit from.
Join the session on the night over in the BN shop
2024 marks the 60th anniversary of British Naturism/CCBN, an organisation that sprung from the unification of the British Sun Bathers Association and the Federation of British Sun Clubs.  The history of Naturism in the UK goes back even further and 2024 marks the centenary of Sunlight League and formation of The Camp in Wickford, Essex, the first Naturist Club in the UK.
This longevity is achieved by one thing – the members who practise Naturism.  For this reason, the first activity we are launching to mark the anniversary is one that gets everybody involved.
Challenge 60 is an activity that will run throughout 2024 and give people the spur to try new things.  The full challenge list is available to members here and includes a range of activities to allow people of all interests and situations to be involved.  Some challenges can be completed by going to local or national events, some involve sport, some you can complete without leaving your homes.  Some will promote Naturism because they involve pushing our personal boundaries and being a little more open.  The challenges could be used as a convenient excuse to raise Naturism in conversation or invite a friend to join you in an activity “so you can complete that challenge”.
The downloadable logbook will allow you to record your accomplishments on paper.  Of greater interest will be the Challenge 60 log available in the member’s section of the British Naturism website where you will be able to record your achievements and see how others are doing.  You may have also noticed a new tab on your own profile where you can access your personal log.  We suspect that groups of friends might compete in completing challenges, thus feeding the idea of community.  Because that is what Challenge 60 is about, bringing Naturists together so that we celebrate the past and create a bright future.
The logs will go live on the 1st of January as these are challenges to complete in the anniversary year.  We plan to create a dedicated gallery where people can add images associated with Challenge 60 if they wish and there is a new forum for discussion of the anniversary.
So start planning for 2024 to see how many of these you can do.
Enjoy! It's always great to introduce a new Naturist place for holidays! Vivo Tourismo resort is to be found on the Greek island of Rhodes and has 14 rooms, a swimming pool, a restaurant and is only 20 metres from the beach. Find out more at https://vivatourismo.eu. There's also the possibility of a BN members' group holiday...
British Naturism members’ discount!
Our friends at Viva Tourismo have given us a fantastic discount to pass on to all BN members - one-third off the price of a room! What’s more, if you stay for 14 nights, you will only pay for 12! Please quote the code BN2024 when booking.

British Naturism is the UK member of the International Naturist Federation, the global organisation for Naturists that exists to represent, support and coordinate Naturist activity worldwide. If you are a BN member, you are automatically a member of the INF! You can find out more at inf-fni.com.
Their newsletter - Focus - is published every two months and provides an update as to what’s going on in the INF and beyond
The latest issue is out now and is available from the BN website downloads section
Over the last five years we have seen an increase in openness about Naturism.  Historically, people didn’t want to be photographed in a Naturist environment for fear that somebody might see, these days we find most people at events are not only happy but keen to be in pictures that might be used publicly to share this part of their lives.  We know that many people are open about Naturism with friends, family and colleagues, but we all know some friends that are not.  Moreover, the IPSOS poll told us that 14% of people participate in Naturist activities, but we don’t see them, so they are doing so discreetly.
With Christmas coming up, we will be spending time with our families, will Naturism come up over the Christmas dinner table?
In the debate session next week, Monday 11th December, we will discuss how we have successfully worked Naturism into conversations and what pitfalls there might be to avoid.  Are there instances where family have given a negative reaction and are there steps that can be taken to resolve the issue.  Hopefully the session will create some tips for people who want to share their lives are nervous about being open.
Join us on the night from the BN shop to discuss your pointers or your worries and hopefully we can support each other.
