News and articles about BN and the wonderful world of Naturism
FREE CPR & AED (Defibrillator)Training for World Restart a Heart Day will be offered by British Naturism online on 16th October at 2.30pm.
Restart a Heart (RSAH) Day is an annual worldwide initiative led by the Resuscitation Council who aim to increase the number of people surviving out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.
In light of CV-19 the steps you should take when performing CPR have changed but the need to perform CPR has not.
Out of hospital cardiac arrests are still happening across the UK, by learning and performing CPR, you could be the difference between life and death of a loved one at home, a colleague at work, or a stranger in the street.

Congratulations to Stéphane Deschênes on his election as President of the International Naturist Federation (INF)
The election took place on Saturday (9 October) at the INF’s 37th World Congress in Slovenia.
In a statement issued on Monday evening (11 October) he and Sieglinde Ivo said that they will “join together as co-presidents until she retires at the end of her term in three years; at which point she will have tirelessly served as the president of the INF-FNI for 16 years. This arrangement has several advantages. First, it joins two distinct factions in a cooperative arrangement that is typical of naturism and that may be an example in many countries that are plagued with divisive politics. Secondly it allows for an orderly and gradual transition. Finally, having co-presidents provides more leadership for the many modernisation projects and challenges that face the INF-FNI in the next few years.”
Modernisation and unifying the INF will be a big job, and we are looking forward to this exciting new chapter in the INF’s history.
Next Monday, 11th October, we're delighted to announce the return of Linda Weber and Andy Walden from the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) to the Forum Live. We last spoke to them in September 2020 and learned a lot about their activities.
Readers of BN Magazine will know that 2021 is the 90th anniversary of AANR and so we're pleased to welcome them again and catch up!
Linda currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Western Region of AANR - the American Association for Nude Recreation and was appointed Marketing Chair, which encompasses Marketing, Spanish Outreach, and WINR - Women in Nude Recreation.
Andy is current Secretary for the AANR Western Region.  He splits his time between his home on the Island of Hawai‘i and the Deserts of Arizona and Utah.

During Sunday's AGM, Mark Bass, BN President, announced that the Executive Committee had awarded Certificates of Merit to two members.  Such certificates are awarded to people whose contribution to naturism has been found to be exceptional.  This has been the first year when nominations were invited from the wider membership, and thank you to everyone who responded.
The recipients are:
Peter Edwards:  Peter has, over a period of more than a decade, from 2010-2021, acted as South-West Regional Chairman; in that capacity he has worked quietly and effectively in the background without seeking the limelight for himself.  He has been especially involved in oversight of clothes-optional days at Abbey House Gardens and has been an effective representative on the Studland Users Group.  He is stepping down as Chairman but plans to remain active on the regional committee.
Val Humfress: Val has been Chair of the White House Naturist club for some 18 years, and has fulfilled the role with extraordinary dedication, care, diligence and good grace through many challenges – including dealing with local planning issues that threatened the club.  She has presided over sustained growth in membership at the club, and offered an outstandingly effective response to the COVID pandemic, helping to keep club members together and facilitating the club's opening during 2020.
Many congratulations and thanks to both Peter and Val!

Here’s a round-up of some of the many issues the management team have been dealing with over the last few months - there's plenty going on!

Volunteers and employees
It’s been a good season for attracting volunteers.  We’ve recruited a new equality and diversity officer, and a partnerships officer - whose job will be to build contacts to help effective campaigning.  No less than three legally qualified members have volunteered to help British Naturism with legal questions, complementing the work of Peter and Christine Wright, whose roles are unaffected.
And we were delighted to welcome on board Georgia Williams as our new customer services assistant.
But there’s no getting away from the fact that we are still carrying key vacancies at Board level.  Appointment of a new Finance Director proved to be short-lived, when the person appointed concluded that he wasn’t able to give to the role the time it required.  The management team will be looking at ways to lighten the load of this role, including the possibility of buying-in some services.
And we still lack a Chair, although Jon Williams has been an excellent vice-chair.
One new volunteering role is the Clubs Officer (log in required).  Following last year’s consultation of BN’s clubs nationwide, we see this as a key role in improving the representation of clubs within BN, and also in providing support directly to clubs.
It goes without saying that we would welcome expressions of interest in these, or any other, currently vacant roles.

British Naturism: Sunfolk
We still await a decision on our application for planning permission for the various improvements we want to make to the site.  It has taken much longer than we were given to understand it would.  Consequently, we’re having to postpone some of the improvement work we hoped to start this autumn.  That’s a disappointment, but we’re happy that so many people have been able to enjoy Sunfolk this year even before the work has been carried out.

Events
The end of lockdown has enabled dozens of events to take place across the country and the management team have been managing, supporting, and advising on many.  To mention just three, the Naked Heart Walk at Painshill Park in Surrey raised some £26,000 for our charity of the year British Heart Foundation.  The first ever, and well-supported, guided naked walk took place across Morecambe Bay.  And Nudefest, one of BN’s flagship events, was a great success despite disappointing weather.

Naturism is Lawful leaflet
We've worked hard on creating a new resource for Naturists, taking the form of a web page, a downloadable A5 document and a business card-sized item available from the BN shop, which has been really well-received by those who enjoy the great outdoors without clothes. They explain that Naturism is lawful in concise language, in a format that can be given away to people naturists might encounter.

Naturist Research
We’re delighted once again to be working with Dr Keon West. His latest project concerns the relationship between exposure to nudity during childhood, and various types of adjustment or maladjustment as adults.  We hope that this will add to the weight of evidence showing that those who are exposed to nudity at an early age typically have greater body-confidence and self-esteem when they are older.

Regions
We’re currently consulting on BN’s Regions.  The organisation is split into six regions whose role, among other things, is promote Naturism, provide opportunities to practise it, and to represent members and clubs at Executive Committee level.  The consultation asks members what they want from their regions and seeks views on how well the current arrangements are working.  A separate, more technical, consultation seeks views on various proposals for modest reform. The results will be examined by the Regional Structures working group.  The deadline for responding is 31 October.

AGM
The AGM in 2020, held online for the first time, attracted the largest attendance in living memory.  We made the decision to hold this year’s AGM online too, since it makes the event so readily accessible for most members.
As well as the formal business, this year's AGM this coming weekend will include a “state of the nation” address from BN President Mark Bass, and an opportunity for questions and answers.
I'm delighted to announce the return on Monday 4th October of popular Forum Live guests, Nick and Lins of www.nakedwanderings.com who we last spoke to in August 2020.
Nick and Lins, as their website name suggests, travel the Naturist world and both blog and vlog about it. Since we last met them they've travelled extensively in Spain and Italy, as well as closer to their home in Belgium. We'll catch up with their adventures, learn more about the places they've been and find out their views of the state of Naturism post-pandemic.

We are delighted to share more dining events coming up soon; a naked dining event at The Three Horseshoes in Hertfordshire on 9th October, and in West Sussex, on 16th October, there is an opportunity to join in with a Secret Naked Supper Club

Fancy joining a Naturist walk while the weather is still fine?  Well here are a couple to choose from;  the Naturist Ramblers are in Oxford on 29th September, and you can set off with a BN group from Wendover in the Chiltern Hills, on 1st October.

It's not long now until our four days of Highland hospitality with the return of The Gathering, in Scotland, in a new venue, from the 15th to 18th October.

Another Great British Skinny Dip has been announced, this time in South Yorkshire, on 23rd October, whatever the weather, as you will dive into a warm skinny dip at the Bramcote Leisure Centre

You can find a huge choice of online events to entertain you, keep you fit, or allow you to be in touch with our fantastic community! Including The Forum Live for which next week's session (27th September) is a Holiday session, aimed at giving members a chance to talk about holidays, where to go and what to do.

NATURISM IS LAWFUL
Naturists, also known as nudists, are people who enjoy activities — including walking, cycling, sunbathing and swimming — in the nude.
There’s no need to be concerned if you meet naturists.
Simply being naked in a public place is not against the law. It doesn’t amount to “indecent exposure”, contrary to popular belief. We’re naturists, not flashers.
Police call handlers have instructions to explain to anyone who calls to report naturist walkers or ramblers that no offences are being committed and that no police attendance is necessary. If you’d like to know more, visit www.bn.org.uk/policing.
There is no evidence that naturism—or the sight of a naked person or people walking or rambling—is in any way harmful to children or, for that matter, adults.
NATURISM IS GOOD FOR YOU
Naturism is increasingly popular as more people find it boosts a sense of well-being, freedom and happiness, and so is good for their physical and mental health. If you would like more information, visit British Naturism’s web site: www.bn.org.uk.

This information is also available as a download from the BN website for you to print out and carry with you, or save to an electronic device such as a mobile phone, and as a pre- printed leaflet that you can order from the BN shop.
We're experiencing GoodTimes at BN, with membership on the rise, fantastic live and online events and a wonderful community of like-minded people.
But don't take our word for it! Here's what people are saying:
The friendliness of everyone I've spoken to has been a major plus. I've made lifelong friends all around the country.
BN Magazine is very impressive
People are helpful if you need information
Enjoyed the Zoom dances and Naked Fitness classes.
Keep up the good work.......I'm enjoying the membership!
The general warmth and enthusiasm of members is wonderful. For someone who is new to Naturism and quite self conscious it is very nice to just be online occasionally with people who ‘get it’.
Good to know that we are part of a larger family in Europe that we feel a part of, we’ve been using sites in Spain with the motorhome.
Everyone is so friendly and helpful.
So glad I joined, after many years of worrying about "coming out" as a Naturist.
The social online events are fantastic, the pub, coffee morning and the Forum Live.
The commitment to advocacy and awareness of Naturism in Britain and beyond.
The website is really good and I hope to make more of my membership now the restrictions are lifting
My wife and I really enjoyed the evening at Waterworld Stoke.
I had no idea about the amount of online events you're running - doing great work to keep the community alive and connected during this period! Also hadn't realised the amount of work which the legal team do to help Naturists if needed.
Even if I only get to one or two in person events a year, I intend to stay a member because I can see the huge value in the great work the EC and many members/volunteers are doing to promote Naturism and ensure there is positive change - even around just making sure that we don't lose spaces and slots for swims.
I have been so wonderfully surprised just what a friendly organisation it is! The forums have provided an excellent platform, where I have been able to meet so many like-minded people, made new friends, and, importantly, kept up with news, and find information so easily!
After two years of valuable and groundbreaking work, Donna Price has decided it's the right time for her to step down from
her role as British Naturism's Women in Naturism Co-Ordinator.
In the two years since she took on the post, Donna, (often with husband John) has enjoyed a high-profile in the media, having been featured on many occasions in newspapers, blogs, radio and TV - and not only in the UK - about her life as a woman who enjoys the Naturist lifestyle. All of these media opportunities have been positively received as Donna has emphasised the many benefits of a clothes-free life and she has been a point of contact for many people wishing to learn more about Naturism.
Donna has also made successful contacts with the Women's Institute movement and has been invited to speak at a number of their gatherings. She has curated the Women in Naturism pages on this website adding great advice and first-person stories aimed specifically at women as they enter the lifestyle, and tell friends and relations about it.
Donna's work and enthusiasm have been very much appreciated by the Executive Committee and we wish Donna further
success in the future as we know she will continue to extol the virtues of Naturism in her daily life.
We are looking for a successor - and for others to join the Women in Naturism team. Could it be you? Or someone you know? Find information on volunteering here, and follow the links. Alternatively, send an email to British Naturism's Volunteering Officer, John Gelder
Guernsey was the location for the first Channel Islands' event for the Great British Skinny Dip (GBSD) and was a terrific success.
Fifty dippers, mostly women, enjoyed an exhilarating time at L’Ancresse Bay, raising £5,000 in the process - and are now eagerly exploring the possibility of a monthly nude swim on the island.
Money was raised for two local charities - Pink Ladies (Breast Cancer) and Mug (Testicular Cancer) as well as the GBSD's British Heart Foundation.
Interest in the dip was immediate when announced with a Facebook page attracting 150 people, and local papers reporting the event on this popular beach. On the day, the dip was counted down by local radio presenter Oscar Pearson and filmed by the local BBC TV news crew.
The Great British Skinny Dip has promoted and encouraged attitudes to Naturism to change in Guernsey. Look out for a fuller report in the Winter issue of British Naturism magazine.

Our quarterly magazine is just one of the many benefits a BN membership provides, so if you’re not a member yet, why not make today the day you join us?
Did you know that British Naturism operates through six regions across the whole of the UK? Everyone who joins BN – with the exception of overseas members – is automatically allocated to one of the regions.
Each region is managed by volunteers who administer what is formally known as the regional association. They oversee organisation of events in the region – creating lots of opportunities to practise Naturism close to home – as well as local campaigning, recruiting new members, supporting national campaigns (such as the Great British Skinny-Dip and Women in Naturism) at local level, and defending the interests of individual members and clubs within the region.
Many people will know that we’ve dedicated much time lately to scrutinising various aspects of our organisation to make sure we deliver - now and in the future. It’s been a long time since we last looked at how effectively regions were working, how well they were meeting members’ expectations, and the relationship between the regional volunteers and the national organisation.
The 2020 Annual General Meeting of British Naturism mandated the Executive Committee to carry out a review, in consultation with interested parties, of they way regions were operating. This work has been undertaken by a working committee within the EC. It’s chaired by Edwin Kilby, the International Director, and its membership includes all the regional coordinators and others.
The working group was unanimous about the importance of building structures that contribute significantly to the overall effectiveness of British Naturism and providing a really valuable local service to all members.
We’ve now launched a survey in order to understand better what members would like and to help the organisation work better. We’d be grateful if you’d complete it. The closing date is 31st October 2021.
We’re looking forward to learning what you think!

The Forum Live is back! Please join us on Monday 13th September when our guest will be television Producer/Director and visual artist, Rosemary Baker who works in documentary filmmaking.
We helped Rosemary and her crew to make a film in the recently released BBC Three film "Hayley Goes Naked", which was fronted by Welsh presenter Hayley Pearce, and featured filming with British Naturism at British Naturism Sunfolk. As you will see from the picture, Rosemary - on the left - was happy to join in while she worked.
We’ll be talking to her about the series - 'our' episode in particular - and documentary filmmaking in general.
Her award-winning short film "Lesbian." was released on All4 in 2021 and has since been selected for numerous prestigious international film festivals. She is currently working on a new documentary project.
See you there! Reserve your place now!
Regular readers will know that once a quarter, we hold a Forum Live event for members to meet and ask questions of British Naturism's Executive Committee. The next session will take place in two weeks time, on the 20th September 2021 at 7:30pm.
The event is open to all British Naturism members and is expected to last an hour. Questions for the Directors and Executive Committee members on any relevant subject will be welcome. To help us manage the session and to provide the best possible answers we would welcome questions in advance, and we will take these first. Subject to time constraints we will take questions on the night as well.
If you have a question, please send it to headoffice@bn.org.uk

On Sunday 5th September British Naturism members in Northern Ireland organised the first ever official Skinny Dip in NI.
Between 11am and 3pm a total of 80 - 100 people gathered on the 2 miles of golden sand beach at Portstewart Strand and stripped off and ran, walked and boldly marched into the tide to help raise over £1700 for the British Heart Foundation (NI). For over half this was their first ever encounter with Social Nudity in a public place and they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The many Sunday dog walkers got a bit of a surprise but all seemed to accept that nudity in these circumstances is acceptable and another step was taken to Normalizing Naturism.
The nights may be drawing in, but the Great British Skinny Dip continues! If you haven’t already done so, now’s the time to sign up for an event (or two!).
Whether you’re a seasoned skinny dipper or a nudie-newbie, why not experience the freedom of swimming in the buff? Don't listen to conventional thought that says 'nude is rude', or that swimming naked with others is somehow provocative.

And don't pay attention to the 'wisdom' that says you must have the perfect body or everyone will stare at and judge you. We're all perfect! And it's exhilarating to swim in our natural state.

Check out the brand-new event at Arundel Lido in Sussex. And the first GBSD in Northern Ireland - a big beach event at Portstewart Strand for British Heart Foundation (pictured)

From mental health and body positivity to just feeling the rush of being alive, there are many health benefits to being naked. But if you need another reason to skinny dip, why not do it for a great cause? The Great British Skinny Dip supports the nation's largest heart charity, the British Heart Foundation, and we encourage participants to raise vital funds to power the nation’s heartbeats.
Check out these upcoming swims:

TODAY! September 2:
Race Hub - Six Hills Lake, Leicester

One sunny August day we set off to the historic market town of Higham Ferrers, situated in the Nene Valley in East Northamptonshire. Our reason for travelling was to stay at No 1 Hind Stile, a new B&B for Naturists. It is co-owned and hosted by BN Member William and his partner Simon.
On arrival, William greeted us and welcomed us to his boutique accommodation, which he describes as an, ‘eclectic collection of colour and pattern’. It’s amazing and feels as if you are stepping into rooms more suited to a stately home. There are two unique bedrooms, both with king size beds - one with a four-poster - and beautifully appointed en-suite bathrooms. Each bedroom has Lavazza coffee and tea-making facilities along with a smart TV including Netflix. Wi-fi is free. There are all the other little luxuries associated with a quality stay, such as 100% cotton linen, 'duck n down' duvets, and exotic Penhaligons toiletries for you to pamper yourself with. It’s sheer luxury.
During the warmer months there is a beautiful private garden which is a sun trap. At one end is a dining table and chairs under a metal lattice gazebo, and at the other, a small pond with a fountain, with sun loungers to relax on the lawn. The garden is very lush with carefully chosen shrubbery and planting and white blooms throughout, running along each side of the garden and the full length of the old high wall on one side.
On those winter days when it’s bitterly cold outside, the guest lounge with its open wood fire is the perfect place to relax in comfort. The breakfast room is just over the hallway from here, and is where you will be served a full cooked English breakfast, as well as plenty of cereals, juices, yoghurts, and home-made bread for toast, alongside coffee and tea. There are many restaurants in the town for eating out, but this room is also available to you in the evening if you choose to order a takeaway. As the property is not licensed, you are welcome to bring your own drinks - you could say it really is home from home, but perhaps not, as here William will prepare and lay out the dining table for you to enjoy your dinner, and clear it all away afterwards!
Higham Ferrers means ‘high homestead/village’ and it is steeped in history with the Grade 1 listed St Mary’s Church built in 1280, Chichele College founded in 1422 by the then Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Bede House which was built for 12 men of over 50 years old to be looked after by one woman!
Central to the Nene Valley is the Nene Wetlands nature reserve, a square mile of both wild and man-made habitats that can be reached on bikes with many walking opportunities. Rushden Lakes can be reached on foot where you can walk extensively, and we were told you can even go canoeing. There are also some beautiful open gardens to be found in the Northampton area at Coton Manor, Deene Park, and Kelmarsh Hall. If you time your visit to Higham Ferrars for the end of the month, there is a Farmers’ Market on the last Saturday, and for those who like a little retail therapy, the Rushden Lakes retail park is a short drive away with a plethora of branded shops.
No 1 Hind Stile is a little Naturist haven, and is perfect for an escape where you can relax and feel completely comfortable. William will disappear into the background into the other side of the house where he and his partner live, but appear quietly to service any requirements or to deal with any needs. He is calm and welcoming, and looks after you well. He is the perfect and most professional of hosts. Each morning when you come down the stairs you will find the dining room is beautifully laid for the delivery of your sumptuous breakfast that is included in the price, and at only £65 for a single person or £85 for a couple per night, this particular little escape is not only exceptionally good but it is exceptionally good value as well. This is a great retreat and could be the ideal place for two couples wishing to take a break together.
William and Simon do take bookings from the general public, but will always ensure that when a Naturist booking is made, you will be free to be nude throughout the house and garden. Just mention British Naturism when booking.

This weekend sees an opportunity to climb aboard for an evening cruise from Bournemouth Pier and the latest in the profile- and fund-raising project The Great British Skinny Dip at Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk. We had a great night last weekend, at Marbury Pool, with some guests trying costume-free swimming for the first time.

It's not too late to join in other dips - next up are Race Hub in Leicestershire, and GBSD's first ever skinny dip in Northern Ireland at Portstewart strand - it promises to be popular! Our second visit to Shap Lido in the Lake District follows soon after.
Back on dry land, you can also take a Naturist trip to the Secret Nuclear Bunker on 9th September (not 7th as originally stated - sorry!)

Whatever the weather, you can find a huge choice of online events to entertain you, keep you fit, or allow you to keep in touch with our fantastic community!

Anecdotally and through many online posts, conversations, feedback and discussions, it’s clear that many of us have been delighted to have the community of Naturists around us, giving us the opportunity to be active, to meet others and share experiences. This has been particularly true during lockdown, when life turned upside down and the activity and society that we took for granted all but disappeared. Has Naturism and the Naturist community contributed to our mental health? Three Naturists tell us it has...

We have a basic human need for connection and interaction with others. Naturism and particularly social nudity provides many with an opportunity to address that need in an enjoyable and safe way. We all know the barriers are down, literally, figuratively and psychologically, as soon as you are in a naked environment, providing opportunities to feel connected to others, whether through being a core member of a club, attending the occasional BN event or just popping to the beach every now and again to smile a greeting at a fellow Naturist.
As a therapist, I know that attachment theory (Bowlby/ Ainsworth) underpins much of what we know about the impact of our early life on our developing cognitive and emotional system. It demonstrates that babies need a responsive relationship with a primary care giver, usually a parent, to have their needs met and develop a sense of security in the world. Children who do not experience this through neglect, absence or incapacity will respond by either becoming more demanding or becoming withdrawn and ‘giving up’ – people may recall the sad scenes from eastern bloc orphanages of unattended babies sitting inert in cots. If a child experiences warm, close and consistent care, they become ‘securely attached’ and begins to use the parent as a safe base from which to explore and can generally tolerate longer periods of separation with minimal stress. If the caregivers are inconsistent, various, absent or neglectful then the child’s attachment is likely to be ‘insecure’. Subsequently, the infant is often more clingy, reluctant to move away from the attachment figure and explore their environment.
Along comes the pandemic, throwing all of us into a new and strange psychological and emotional environment. Psychologically, we all still have that child in us and during such a period of unprecedented stress our experience of the world in which we live can link us back to old behaviours and needs. Lockdown robbed the world of the usual opportunities for social interactions and connection in the usual ways with family, friends and day to happenings, and we have seen an epidemic of isolation, loneliness and disconnection.
Naturism already provides an opportunity to connect with others through shared philosophy, beliefs and lifestyle choices. Many of us enjoy connecting with others at beaches, clubs and events, which again was not possible during a pandemic with necessary restrictions on movement and gatherings. A huge hole opened up in life.
The good folks at British Naturism speedily stepped up to the plate, providing a wide range of online opportunities for connection from Aerobics to Yoga for the active and pub nights, quizzes, coffee and chat for the garrulous. The way the online activities were designed and delivered enhanced the connection. What a professional bunch of facilitators. I can only mention those with whom I personally engaged during lockdown
Yoga with Georgia - This was my first foray into the world of yoga and now I’m hooked. The discomfort of downward dog was soon replaced by the relief of having body parts stretched and energised that I’d forgotten I had. Starting naked yoga at home made it far easier to develop the confidence to appreciate the benefits of nude yoga – no restrictive clothing and far fewer ‘sweaty bits’. Our lovely teacher is a superb example of the BN activity leader. Encouraging us to benefit not only from the physical advantages produced by yoga, but also the psychological - without the interference of our usual anxious or angry thoughts, the stress response system relaxes and the body can do a better job of healing itself and focusing on the breath and concentrating on the yoga practice certainly enabled that to happen. Engaging, caring and superbly competent, with a kind sense of humour, understanding that we are not all uber flexible/strong, and encouraging each person to join in at their own level, Georgia connected with each of the 100 plus people in the class in a unique way, which left people feeling cared for and somehow valued. Connecting with others who are also suffering, striving or relaxing into their practice helped us continue trying harder ourselves and a conscious focus on the essential mind/ body connection encourages us that we are doing what we can to improve wellbeing.
Fitness classes with Sheryn, and with Roy - Not only a chance to leap about energetically with others as we tried to synchronise our bodies to a range of relaxing tunes and energising beats led by the enthusiasm and skill of the teacher, but also a moment to connect with the class at the end of the session through the parading and sharing of pets and cuddly toys, to the genuine delight of Sheryn. Sharing the joy! Crazy but fun. And once we got to Nudefest we could of course share the odd celebratory ‘whoop’ in the flesh. Exercising, whether it’s going for a walk or doing a vigorous fitness class, can often lift your mood, as endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain.
Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body - despite the demands of fitness classes delivered by Roy, encouraging participants  to keep going beyond their usual comfort zone and challenge themselves physically - the feel good factor afterwards was worth it. And again delivered in such a way to offer a feeling of connection to the wider group. Psychologically and emotionally, the exercise facilitators all provided what a good ‘parent’ provides for their securely attached child.
Quizzes - How grateful are we to the Irish bunch, who opened up their cranial endeavours to the rest of BN and all the volunteers who spent hours of research to come up with fascinating questions. Breakout groups gave a chance, not only to combine brain power for the team answers, but also to share the wrong ones in a considerate and accepting environment, chatting, connecting and appreciating the company of other Naturists. Linking back to attachment theory, the BN moderators, who were visible at every online event, maintained a safe space for all to feel ‘held’ securely, maintaining the respectful and trustworthy environment that is a fundamental part of Naturism.
Engaging with others, seeing others strive and enjoy activities reminded us we are not alone and gave psychological permission to ‘go for it’ ourselves. As we emerge from lockdown, blinking like moles into the bright lights of the world of going out and about, British Naturism are maintaining the online programme to continue to offer the benefits of virtual connection alongside face to face meetings, proving that despite the dreadful impacts of the pandemic good things have arisen from the experience.

When the first lockdown started in March 2020 we were all plunged into a very different and unknown world. All the things that we normally rely on to give us a sense of safety and wellbeing disappeared very quickly. I found myself cut off from most of my friends and the activities that I enjoy and facing a very uncertain and quite frightening future. The world had become a very shaky and unreliable place. With all these uncertainties and very little positive news to balance it I very quickly fell prey to worrying and increasing anxiety. Although my wife and I were basically okay and coping quite well, I really missed the broader support that one gets from one’s friends.
However, when I started attending the BN coffee morning and pub things began to get better. There I found companionship, a place to have a moan and lots of good natured joshing. But also, every now and again I found myself in a conversation in which someone would say that they were feeling anxious or frightened or lonely and that allowed me to say that I was feeling those same things too, which would open up the conversation for myself and others to discuss our fears and worries. Knowing that I wasn’t alone in my anxiety and uncertainty and being able to admit to other people that that was what I was feeling helped me enormously. It helped me regain my perspective and feel that I wasn’t alone in what had become a very scary world. The fitness classes really helped too. They gave my wife and I a focus and a routine - and they also turned out to be tremendous fun.
Thanks to BN’s Zoom events, I have made many new friends both in the UK and from around the world and I have also met some of them in real life as well. My social circle and support network is now much bigger than it was and as a result my mental health and sense of wellbeing are much, much better. There have been times in the past year and a half that I really don't know what I would have done without the pub and the coffee morning.

Lockdown came at a difficult time for us, a couple who lived 25 miles apart. I had been made redundant following a reorganisation, and Gill had just spent a time in hospital with heart problems. She was at home shielding, with me visiting with shopping. The online events gave us an opportunity to take part separately, and occasionally together. Particular online events that we enjoyed initially were the Afternoon Tea, the drum workshop and Pimms on the lawn. Later on we tried the Life Drawing classes, taking the opportunities to draw other people and also act as models ourselves. The Coffee Mornings were a chance to meet up with each other and other people. Sometimes we would be in the same breakout room and other times not. As the restrictions started to lift and Gill’s health began to improve, we tried more activities, such as Laughter Yoga with Eva, Yoga with Georgia, the weekly quiz, and the Monday Forum Live. Gill also joined in the Women Uncovered meeting.
What has been uplifting has been the opportunity to dance and jump around as part of a group. We enjoyed the Lockdown Keep Fit with Sheryn. It became a tradition at the end to have a dance with pets and stuffed toys, which included Gill’s collection of toy carrots from Aldi - it soon became our trademark dance! Other chances to move with music were GroovX with Jooles and Fitsteps with Caroline.
The highlights were the Naked Discos, dancing around the Christmas Tree wearing nothing more than a Santa Hat or reindeer antlers! Like many others we purchased disco lights to enhance the experience and danced naked into 2021 with just a bow tie and tiara! Then followed the ‘decades’ nights during the dark months of January and February. Gill found a wig for me so I could relive my younger days dancing with a full head of hair!
2020 was a difficult year, but it was more bearable thanks to BN, or should that be bareable!
Andrew
