The Forum Live Debate - Putting the Nature in Naturism

Today we observe Earth Day 2024, which has the theme of Planet vs Plastics.  Naturism is closely associated with natural living, it is even in the name!  The long-standing international definition of Naturism states:
"Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and for the environment".
To reflect on this synergy, we will use The Forum Live Debate next week to discuss how Naturism supports environmental issues, how we might exert our own influence for the benefit of the planet, and whether there are steps we can take as Naturists or concerns we could consider to minimise any negative impact.
So if you are interested in natural living or the welfare of the planet, do join us on the 29th April through the BN shop.

New! Dine Naked Cruise in Cardiff Bay!

Help Linda (your south-east Wales BN Rep) make history as we launch our first Dine Naked Cruise in Cardiff on 27th July 2024, setting sail at 7pm.

We will sail aboard the all weather Seren-Y-Bae for a 3 hour naked cruise around Cardiff Bay taking in the evening views before gently cruising along either The River Taff or The River Ely.

The evening cruise will include an excellent buffet, music and a dance floor and then who knows what other fun activities: those who have been to the Cardiff Coffee Afternoon will have some kind of idea!! There is also a bar (card only).

Numbers are restricted to 45, so don't wait until last minute if you want to enjoy this wonderful evening.

The Forum Live - Women in Focus

Join Helen Berriman, BN's Women's Officer on Monday April 22, as she discusses the inaugural Ladies only clothing optional holiday in Fuerteventura having just returned.   A unique and liberating experience for those who are looking to embrace their bodies in a safe accepting environment. For many women, the idea of being completely nude in front of strangers may seem daunting or even terrifying, however, for others it can be a powerful and empowering way to break free from societal norms and expectations surrounding body image and self-acceptance.  She'll talk about the different activities they enjoyed and the new friendships made and further plans for more holidays like this.

SANER is Smokin’!

I often see an event listed for BN’s SANER (Scotland and North England) Region and think to myself, “I should go up there and check this out because it looks fabulous.” I haven’t so far, but this could be the year! There are already so many nudie activities to choose from on the calendar that it’s hard to know where to begin.
So let’s be sensible and start with SANER’s new events listing board, which is now available to members (log-in required). Here, in addition to the regular weekly and monthly swims and skinny dips, you’ll find some very interesting goings-on.
For instance, there’s the Alnwick Garden Visit on 8 June. It’s a naked return visit by invitation of the Duchess of Northumberland to a beautiful garden with water features you can play in. You might want to visit the poison garden, but don’t touch anything!
Then there’s – and this might be the thing that gets me up there – the 22 June  Stirling Town Jail naked lock-in and meal. According to organiser Danny Callaghan, this is a “dual event of a scary naked lock-in” at the jail, where you’ll “learn how you had to toe the line and explore what in its day was the most up to date of penal reform prisons.”  After that comes the meal – porridge if you want! – at the King Robert Hotel.
On 13 July there are two events to choose from. Celebrate BN’s 60th anniversary by sailing under the Forth Road Bridge, which is celebrating its 60th, too. If the weather doesn’t co-operate, there’s a heated bar and saloon. Follow the boat trip up with a Naturist evening visit to the Bo’ness Motor Museum, which houses, among other items, a few original Bond cars and an amazing collection of Bond and Dr Who memorabilia.
Or how about a boat trip around the Farne Islands on 27 July? Or a 24 August return to Jupiter Artland Garden, (pictured) with its quirky artworks, woodland strolls, earthwork mounts and meadows?
Last, but definitely not least, September 7 sees another Great British Skinny Dip at Findhorn, currently the northernmost GBSD event. And don’t forget the 29 September North East Skinny Dip at Druridge Bay which, SANER secretary Steve Froggatt says, isn’t a BN event but is probably the largest UK skinny dip “and definitely a worthy, charitable cause. Many local BN members are also part of a Facebook group associated with the event who encourage body positivity and inclusion for all at their monthly and ad-hoc dips at Druridge Bay.”
The SANER Region is smokin’ - and we should all take advantage of what it’s got to offer! Keep an eye out for more and click here for all activity, including swims, and sports events in the region.

British Naturism is now on TikTok!

In our attempts to expand the appeal and access to Naturism through #TheNakedTruth campaign, we have moved into the TikTok platform, which has a very different style and user base than our traditional approaches.  Broaching a new market brings both challenges and opportunities and this will take time to grow, but spreading the message of respect, joy, and mental health benefits found in Naturism could be a big win.

TheNakedTruth soundbites tackle frequently asked questions and the beneficial effects of Naturism in short-form videos that are a perfect fit for TikTok.  Find our TikTok account here!

If you have a TikTok account or fancy helping by making one, just give us a follow and like videos when they appear.  Those interactions raise the profile of the content and increase the reach so it will be seen by non-Naturists.

A Fabulous Great British Skinny Dip by Chance!

Isn’t it strange how random events can sometimes lead to amazing things? Serendipity was definitely behind the new Great British Skinny Dip (GBSD)  on Sunday, 7 April, at Withington Baths in Manchester.
Here’s how it came about: BN member Peter signed up for a paddle board-yoga class (no, me either) at the baths. While sitting in the café, he mentioned to a woman staff member that the pool would be a good place for a Naturist swim. She was enthusiastic. Sometime later, Peter ran into BN GBSD/NHW Team Leader Ron O’Hare in the sauna at the Worsley swim in Manchester. Peter mentioned the Baths. Ron checked it out. Sure enough, the management was all in favour of a GBSD to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and, more than that, welcomed the idea of holding a Naturist event as a way to boost its diversity, equity and inclusion credentials.
The rest is history! My partner Dave and I turned up to the beautiful Edwardian building, which opened to swimmers in 1913. It’s so old that it has stone steps leading into the pool, and bronze handrails along the side of the pool walls. The pool area was toasty, the water was warm, the sauna was hot.
Around 40 people showed up, an encouraging number for a first-time dip. Among these were seven or eight women, also a good sign. There were a few swimmers, but most of us formed chatty clusters – one of my favourite things about Naturist events. And the dip raised £200 for the British Heart Foundation!
Withington Baths is keen to hold more skinny dips, and is considering quarterly events this year, says Ron. He was particularly impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, who admitted people before the official start time and kept the café open – with no clothes needed - when the swim ended.
I’m thrilled to see a new swimming hole come online, especially one that’s relatively near me. To all you Naturists Up North: Let’s support this and the many other GBSDs in our area. And let’s not forget how a chance remark can lead to a new venue and – just maybe - new nudie friends.

The Forum Live - interviewing Amelia Allen

Over the years, we've worked on a number of media projects, but there are some that really stand out. Around 10 years ago we were fortunate to spend a lot of time with young fashion photographer Amelia Allen who came to a number of events and venues, immersing herself in our world by taking photographs for her book Naked Britain, while also naked herself. She really became part of our community.  
Join me on Monday 15 April as I chat to Amelia about her journey, the reasons for embarking on the project, her experiences and the success of the book - including the clothes-optional launch party spilling out onto the pavement of London's Piccadilly!
Amelia's other projects have included an exhibition and book in The Houses of Parliament (209 Women) and photographing the official women's rights marches and campaigns during the centennial year (2018) that women won the right to vote in Britain. She is currently working on a second book on this subject. She hosts regular workshops and body positivity photography sessions photographing members of the public nude and in a raw and unretouched style to celebrate the diversity and variety of bodies that we don't always see in modern media and often photographs pregnant women naked to show the beauty of the transitional period of the female form and then women postpartum with their babies.

Who will buy...? The BIG Sunfolk Donation Push

There are bound to be many 'beautiful mornings' at Sunfolk this summer and beyond, but we're asking for your help before we get there. Here are the details from Jon Williams
The end of the Sunfolk redevelopment project is in site after nearly four years of design, planning and construction work.  If the weather gods continue to be as co-operative as they have been over the last couple of weeks, we will be able to open the site for bookings from 31 May - we're really looking forward to welcoming BN members and other Naturists back to the site!
The redevelopment project has been a huge challenge for our organisation in many ways, and has only been possible thanks to the support of countless members who have given their time, expertise and donated money towards the cost of the project. We're now asking for support from members and others with a final 'push' as we approach the opening date - there are plenty of opportunities over the next couple of months to volunteer to help with the finishing touches. There are many items we need to purchase - if you head over to the BN Shop you'll find a range of items that we will need at the site which you can 'purchase' online (your 'purchase' will be in the form of a donation which we will then use to buy the items you select). You'll find a range of different items from £3 to £300 - all of which will make an important contribution to the experience we are able to offer visitors on site.

Women in Focus podcast - new episode coming this weekend!

Join host Helen Berriman, BN's Women's Officer, for a new episode of the podcast from British Naturism, dedicated to celebrating and empowering women in the Naturist community. Our podcast is created by women for women, although we warmly invite men to join us and listen as well.
In each episode, we delve into insightful conversations, exploring various aspects of Naturism through the lens of womens' experiences. Whether you are a seasoned Naturist, new to the way of life or just intrigued, we aim to educate and inspire. We highlight the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of women in Naturism. Promoting body acceptance and self love, we explore how women across the planet have shed their clothes and freed up their minds, leading them toward a more fulfilling life in all areas; one that no longer keeps them restricted - emotionally, mentally, physically, and in all other ways.
This time, Helen interviews Martha Vickery, a 27 year old dreadmaker from Somerset, UK. Martha joined British Naturism after a naturist waterpark experience that truly turned her life around. Having fought with her weight and body dysmorphic attitudes through her teens, she is now a public leading light for younger women in Naturism.

We’re able to stroll around stately homes and castles with beautiful gardens without wearing a stitch while we simultaneously raise funds for the British Heart Foundation during our Naked Heart Walks. Latest INF Newsletter

British Naturism is the UK member of the International Naturist Federation, the global organisation for Naturists that exists to represent, support and coordinate Naturist activity worldwide. If you are a BN member, you are automatically a member of the INF! You can find out more at inf-fni.com. 
Their newsletter - Focus - is published every two months and provides an update as to what’s going on in the INF and beyond. The latest edition has as its headline the news that BN’s James Shuttleworth has been appointed as the new Youth Officer for EuNat. Other articles feature information on a new naturist campsite on the Tuscan Coast, an overview of the 2024 Big Nude Boat cruise that took place in February, and notification of an upcoming exhibition called “Naturist Paradise” to be held in Marseille from July to December. There is also an article outlining progress on modernising the INF-FNI through updates to its statutes and rules.

Why Don't All Naturists Join BN? Launching a NEW membership campaign

Here's a new membership campaign that we hope will help everyone to have access to resources and the knowledge of the work of British Naturism to be able present it to the many UK Naturists who aren’t members - and bring them on board.
It’s not about ‘marketing’, nor is it about ‘selling Naturism’ - ie the process of educating people about the many benefits of a naked lifestyle and persuading them to give it a go.
It’s about is encouraging all those existing Naturists in the UK (millions, according to the 2022 BN Ipsos survey) to consider becoming members of British Naturism, thus boosting our numbers and, through their subscriptions, our revenue with which to do what we do - on behalf of everyone.
We've created a crib-sheet that you can download, packed with information. There's also a Forum topic so you can let us know how you get on!

A Brand New Venue for a Nude Swim!

We're delighted to have made arrangements for a skinny dip session at the Withington Pool, Manchester to take place on Sunday 7 April at 6.30 to 8pm.
Although this is a one-off event, who knows what it will lead to? It’s in your hands—if it is well supported, it would surely be repeated, just as happened with the Wigton Pool - where a monthly skinny dip run by the venue now takes place - and Shap Lido. We're constantly looking to bring the Great British Skinny Dips to your location.
Tickets can be purchased via the BN Shop. This is a  BHF Fundraising event - so you are also welcome to donate on the night and new-to-Naturism swimmers are welcome to join us to experience clothes free swimming, just as nature intended! Bring your friends!

Keep your website in vision!
Our main website at bn.org.uk is generated using a Content Management System (CMS) called Invision. The off-the-shelf version has been considerably enhanced by BN’s IT volunteers over the years. A new release is expected for 2025 and because of our enhancements it will take a lot of work to make sure our code still works. For those that are interested, we use cPanel for admin involving files, databases and email.
 
Hey BN Bro, you’re aMember Pro!
aMember Pro is the software used for our membership system.  This has also been enhanced, and connects with BN’s other systems, for example to support membership verification and linking for logins to both the website and BN shop at shop.bn.org.uk which itself is hosted on Shopify.
 
No monkeying about, let’s get those newsletters out!
We have configured MailChimp to create the newsletter systems and subscriber databases for the weekly BN ezine and periodic regional newsletters, which keep us all informed of BN news and events.
 
A massive presence!
Not all of our online presence is directly maintained by the BN IT team, but we get involved when needed. Thanks to the volunteers who help with them! BN IT projects
We are excited to be able to tell you about a few of the forthcoming IT projects that will be enhancing this website:
 
Modern Look-&-Feel: having listened to member feedback we have set up a team to design and implement a more modern look. As part of this project, we will look at how to improve navigation, reducing the number of clicks required to get to desired content. As mentioned before, the customisation we’ve made to the off-the-shelf software will need to be taken into account when the new version of the software is released.
 
Calendar management and integration: we are lucky to have many events that we need to make people aware of, both inside and outside of Naturism - and they are currently listed in many different places. We are looking to bring them all together in one place, namely the BN website calendar bn.org.uk/events, making it easier to find them and avoiding the need for event hosts to add them in multiple online locations.

Opportunities exist to learn and expand your experience of developing RESTful applications, developing APIs using JSON to support interaction between BN and various internal and external systems. Including designing and building databases, pages and developing widgets using PHP and the traditional web technology stack of HTML, CSS and Javascript. BN’s CMS is Invision, similar to Wordpress, so Invision experience is not necessary.
Along the journey, you will be able to increase your knowledge and experience of using SQL, cPanel and CloudLinux on real world systems.
 
UI/UX Designers
Use your analytical and design skills to help BN rejuvenate our website and ensure it is attractive, relevant and exciting to our community by developing the new “look and feel”.
 
The look: help BN formulate page structure & layout The feel: help BN redesign the navigation so our users can find content directly, with the fewest ‘clicks’

The Forum Live Debate: Low-hanging Fruit

There has been a lot of recent discussion around two connected themes:
1) The Ipsos survey of 2022 revealed that 6.75 million people in the UK would describe themselves as Naturists, yet we seem to see or engage only a small percentage of them.
2) We are all keen to see Naturism normalised to the extent that being naked did not attract comment.
The 6.75 million represent 'low-hanging fruit' as we seek to grow Naturist events and their involvement would bring us to the level of normality we seek, as well as create the demand that would drive the creation of new Naturist experiences.
Therefore, The Debate this week will discuss steps we can take as individuals to encourage those people to join us, whether that is membership of British Naturism, participation in organised events, or even just gaining more confidence to be naked in their private lives.
As we move into the warmer weather, this is the ideal time encourage people to participate, so join us for the discussion.

Blackpool Spring Break - underway!

We're wishing all the guests on our Blackpool Spring Break a fantastic time over the next few days. 
The event takes place at the President Hotel, which overlooks the prom in North Shore. It offers gorgeous sea views from the restaurant and a cabaret lounge with excellent nightly entertainment. New this year – and included in the ticket price are two coach trips, one to the world-famous Skipton Market, the other to Bygone Times in Chorley, which is packed with antique, retro and craft stalls.
